Buying Election (8) – Garwood

Rep – Ileen CUCCARO  650  30.13%
Rep – Joseph R. SARNO III  657  30.46%
Dem – William NIERSTEDT  420  19.47%
Dem – Carol KEARNEY  427  19.80%
Personal Choice 3  0.14%

Democrat: 424    Republican: 654

Average votes with links to NJELEC records from which we learn:

Democrats got their money from what looks like:

  • party wheeling: Garwood Democratic Club ($2,000); and
  • individual (thrifty) donors: Debbie Acosta ($50), Michael Martin ($50), Adele Lewis ($30), Bruce Paterson ($25)

Republicans got their money from:

  • party wheeling: Kean for Senate ($500); Union County Republican Committee ($1,500); and
  • the candidates themselves: Cuccaro ($300), Sarno ($40)

Though, as it was explained to me, the Republican landslide had more to do with  the Democrats letting Fanwood run their DPW which got  many Garwood residents mad at the Democrats since they take some pride in having people recognize, especially in the winter months, when they drive through town from either Westfield or Cranford.

Outnumbered 2-1 by registered Ds and outspent 2-1, the GOP candidates ran a great campaign of informing residents and getting out the vote. The 1 issue mentioned was the tipping point to the overall issues that plauged the incumbents and the candidates were able to convey their vision in respectful, honest manner which in turn led to a landslide victory. The county/state GOP should incorporate the very successful strategy of informing the public with very little resources if they plan on winning in the future.

The Republicans won because the people – who the politicians are suppose to be working for- did not want the DPW supervisor let go. The council totally ignored the petition and the members in the galley who wanted their voices heard. I only wish this would go nationwide. They work for us and it is time they are reminded of that.
