Union County Government Giving ‘Unheard Of’ Raises To Top Admins

This letter was sent to the clerks of the 21 municipalities in Union County for distribution to the local governing bodies and got into TAPinto Westfield.

I must bring to your attention an abusive ordinance 835-2021 that was introduced by the Union County Commissioners in their Nov. 4 meeting and are to vote on it in their Thursday, Dec. 2, meeting at 5:30 p.m. The ordinance contains such large unheard of raises to their directors and county manager as to raise some alarm as to whether the county government is working for us the residents or just self-serving their politically connected and to hell with their oaths.

Attached is a sheet compiling raises for this year. Just raises given for this year alone are 8%, 9%, 11%, and 18%. The county manager’s raise comes to $35,000. There are also 2% raises, but from past observation, their modus operandi is next year the “poor” ones will be blessed with large raises.

Also on the spreadsheet, is the compilation of raises given from 6 years ago to now. They range in total from 20%, 30% up to nearly 50%. What entity can afford to give raises such as these?

During this time, we have seen Runnels County hospital sold, the engineering department dismantled, the County Jail and Juvenile detention hall both closed. The county employee count has gone down from around 2,800 six years ago to 2,491 last year to now 2,096 people, a number stated by Commissioner Mirabella.

A smaller county government, less responsibility, less workload, headaches and coordination prove no reason for such large increases in salaries.  Meanwhile, your constituents are surely struggling, laid off, pay and work cutbacks, rent moratorium, and many of their small businesses now closed.

One more observation on their alleged “smaller county government”:  Has your county tax portion gone down in the last 6 years? We know the black hole where this money is going.

If you are outraged at these unwarranted increases, either pass a resolution requesting them to rescind the ordinance, or attend the Commissioner meeting.

Note it’s now in person, on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m. and voice your concern. The meeting address is 10 Elizabethtown Plaza, Elizabeth, NJ. Please help protect our county and its residents. Thank you for your attention.

Very Truly Yours,

Bruce Paterson
Garwood, NJ

This happens almost every year….The normal amount awarded in the private sector is 2-4% if at all these days. These people are such hypocrites: the republicans will sell Runnells, they did. We need a new JV center which was built and now closed. I could go on and on but it is much too upsetting for me.

Union County is now a clone of Hudson County. Changing demographics have made one party rule the norm. So the spending orgy will continue with impunity, the taxes will continue to rise, the county will become one s…hole. Most of the commissioners will be long gone to FL. Remember Dan Sullivan he moved to AZ and is crying all the way to the bank! The officials say if you don’t like what you see, then move!
