Golf Costs – 2014

Were you to OPRA expense and revenue information for Union County golf operations you would get 34 pages in pdf format of about 20,000 numbers in 4-point type and if you squinted you might be able to see the county claiming total revenues rose from $6,325,759 in 2013 to $7,621,400 in 2014 and, after reduction for expenses, net income rising from $162,062 in 2013 to $501,587 in 2014.

But after taking out some columns and leaving only the 2013/2014 Actual Summary for All Units to put into an spreadsheet a different story emerges.

KemperSports has an incentive fee, as explained here, of 6.5% of total revenues in excess of $4.1 million as capped by their total annual management fee.  For 2013 this amounted to $143,400 which is listed as a 2013 expense item though nothing is listed for 2014 even though KemperSpoorts will probably get another $150,000.

Other items not listed in either the 2013 or 2014 columns since the county is picking up the tab:

  1. Property taxes to Kenilworth
  2. Salary and benefits for Armando Sanchez and other county resources involved in golf operations
  3. Expenses paid through the UCIA
  4. Project costs ranging from shaping bunkers to building the Galloping Hill Clubhouse/Banquet Center

Depending on how you apportion that last debt item, which is massive, the county is, conservatively, losing about $2 million annually on golf/banquet hall operations which is five times what they claimed Oak Ridge Golf Course was losing that required it to be closed so they could embark on this “turnaround.”

Wow! not one dollar for liquor at the banquet facility. No wonder “Red Not” is virtually out of business!

    • Thanks for bringing that up. I was hoping that putting their small-print pdf file into a viewable format would bring out things like this.

They did have $1,137,579 appear as revenue in 2014 from a line item called food-banquet that was not there in 2013 but no expense that looks like it’s for liquor. Maybe the county is supplying the liquor and hiding it in a county budget item where it won’t be noticeable (catering freeholder meetings?)

No one could have seen it coming. Is what they will be saying when it all collapses. But I don’t think the criminals will get away with playing stupid this time.

    Tick Tock. Tick Tock.
